Welcome to Statement of Financial Position (Balance Sheet)
This module focuses on the Statement of Financial Position, commonly known as the Balance Sheet, a core financial statement in commercial lending. It provides a snapshot of a client’s financial position at a specific point in time—highlighting their Assets, Liabilities, and Equity.
As a credit analyst, your ability to interpret the Balance Sheet is critical for assessing a client’s:
Liquidity – Can they meet short-term obligations?
Solvency – Are they financially stable over the mid-long term?
Leverage – How much are they relying on debt to operate or grow?
These insights help you structure sound commercial loans, identify financial risks early, and support responsible lending decisions.
What to expect in this module
You will work through real-world commercial lending scenarios that will help sharpen your analytical skills and build your confidence as a credit analyst.
Through practical examples, hands-on exercises, and credit focused case studies, you will learn to:
- Assess a client’s financial strength based upon their Balance Sheet.
- Identify red flags related to liquidity risk, debt levels or asset quality.
- Calculate and interpret key financial ratios.
- Apply balance sheet insights that support sound credit recommendations.
How you will learn
At the end of this module, you will complete a set of final questions and exercises that will test your ability to:
- Interpret Balance Sheet data from a credit analyst’s perspective.
- Identify financial risks such as liquidity issues, over-leverage, or asset quality concerns.
- Apply your insights to make sound credit recommendations that support the client and protect the lender.
